Saturday Night 05-05-12 - Oklahoma City

SW 149th & I-44 just north of Newcastle and the River Bridge
Adults $7 - Teens $5 - Kids $3 - Seniors $5
Family Fun  Races start at 7pm

I am excited because this is the first time in a very long time that I have been able to make it to an auto race. I will be at I-44 Riverside Speedway tonight shooting way too many pictures. I-44 is the first race track I shot pictures at about 15 years ago.

If you see me, get my attention and give me a Thumbs UP, you will make the Home Page on "Fun in Oklahoma". I-44 is a high banked fast, fast, fast speedway and there is always a lot of action. Hope I am still fast enough to get out of the way :) because when things go wrong it all happens very quickly at this exciting track.

Weather is perfect and it will be a great night of fun and action.  Jeff Toney - "Fun in Oklahoma"

Oklahoma City, OK
Winter 2012 OKC Sooner State Games Tournament Report

by Larry Buell

This year our OKC Winter SSG Tourney opened on a bright and pleasantly cool winter’s day.

There was truly an invasion of Tulsans come to compete in this tournament, including (limited only by my aging memory):  John Moore (UR),  Glen Grusendorf (696),  Don Tiger (UR),  Mike Hamby (1304),  David Correa (1308),  Mats Johansson (1583),  Steve Ackart (1648),  Kelly Boyce (1855) ,  Sina Asadallahi (UR),  Bob Kyker (1699),  Ray Pestridge (1908),  Alex Tupas (1840),  Johnny McClanahan, Fernando Prato and yours truly (1687).

This was my first trip down to the new location of the OKC club in the Crossroads mall. I liked the setting, the lighting was very good, the tables well-spaced, and the footing was fine.

Action opened with both the U3000 doubles and U3800 doubles simultaneously in their respective round robins. Since I was entered in the U3000 with David, I didn’t get to see many of the U3800 doubles matches. Ray and Alex, and Sina and Bob were entered from Tulsa in the U3800, and did quite well, finishing with the Bronze for Ray and Alex, and the Silver for Sina and Bob. Gold medal winners in this were Tiffany Tran and Alan Ting from OKC. I had a chance to meet and talk with Alan later in the tournament. He is finishing up his thesis (in civil engineering) and is hoping to find a job soon after graduation. Please pray for him to find a job soon, as this will enable Alan to stay in America which he very much desires.

In the U3000 David and I ran into a buzz saw in the father/son duo of Scott Barone (1987, but rated as high as 2130 in 2006), and his son Shelby (484, but played very consistently with steady returns and good serves). Both David and I had trouble with Scott’s serves, which were amongst the best in the tournament as I later observed in the Open Singles. As a consolation Scott had a bit of trouble with my serves as well, but not nearly enough :P. They had a well-deserved 3-0 win versus us, and went on to win our round robin.

David was showing flashes of his tremendous potential, with great drives/kills, and impressive range in court coverage. We managed to finish second in our RR, and went on to play Dale Goodman (1591) and Linda Piatt (1120) in the Bronze medal round. This was a very close match, with the excellent cross-court hits (naturally far away from the receiver!) of both Dale and Linda forcing David and his aging partner to up their game to eke out a 3-2 win, 11-8 in the fifth (which David won for us convincingly with a powerful forehand kill!).

In the other U3000 RR, Steve and Mike were playing consistently, with their excellent service returns and canny ball placement setting them up to win their RR. They met Scott and Shelby in the finals, and with the powerful drives/kills of Steve, Mike’s deceptively spinney chops and lobs, and their ability to provide an answer to Scott’s serves, were victorious to bring the crown home to Tulsa!

My next event was the U1900 singles. I opened against my new nemesis, Mats, who has shown wonderful improvement in his game, especially in his forehand, over the last 6 months. My power drives, normally my bread and butter, were easily neutralized by his excellent and consistent long-pips returns, and anything slightly up he slaughtered with his powerful forehand.  He easily topped me 3-0.

My next and last match in our RR (there was one default, a no show) was against Terry Bierchesen (sp?, could not find on USATT ratings though Britt had him at 1737). He had a very unusual serve, which consisted of a corkscrew circular whipping motion that put very strange spin on the ball (he later said this was his most potent weapon). I finally managed to figure out how to return (wait for it to come off table and slow/low roll it back). Terry showed very good range, especially for a tall man, enabling him to return my deep shots to forehand/backhand alternating with good consistency. Terry also used anti on his BH, which we don’t see very much anymore (having been replaced in popularity by long-pips), but his used this quite well against my drives. I finally worked out a successful strategy of serving low and fast deep to his anti backhand, and then drive/killing his returns to his deep forehand. This setup a very tight match, with leads changing back and forth many times until I held on to win 11-9 in the 5th.

Mats also beat Terry, and so won our RR. In the finals, it was Kelly, Mats and a lanky lefty Mike Lauro (1709), who showed great ability to counter-drive through the games I watched him play. Our own Kelly ended up winning this event, with Mats second, and Mike third.

Tulsa’s own John Moore had a fine tournament, winning both the U1100s and U1300s. Glen placed 3rd in the U1100s, and the fast-improving Don Tiger (in his first tournament!) had a fine showing finishing with the Silver in the U1300s!

Mike Hamby, who has shown terrific improvement in spin and consistency over the past year, won the U1500s, with the high upside David Correa winning the Bronze.

I had the privilege of watching our own Mats and Steve play in the U1700 finals. This was a very close match, as they exchanged leads and games all the way to the fifth. In the end, Mats’ consistency and good placements overcame the valiant drives and kills of Steve to eke out a victory, Congratulations to them both for a well-fought finale!

My last event was the Open Singles, in which I played a very insignificant (overall) but successful (personal) role. I played the same Mike Lauro who finished 3rd in the U1900s in my opening match. I saw immediately that I could not drive with him, as he was faster and fiercer than I in this regard. However, I also found he had great difficulty returning my short, low, heavy-underspin serves to his backhand, and that if I blocked his drives low but deep to his backhand he would often overhit them off the table. This enabled me (to my  delighted surprise!) to emerge victorious in a 3-0 win.

I then faced the top-seed in my RR, Jeff Johnston, a 2048 HARD BAT player from KC., MO. Although I had close games with him, his ability to misdirect with his body and hit to a different place than I expected, his consistent chops and drive/kills (no spin, hard to lift for me) allowed him to win our RR in a 3-0 victory.

The finals then consisted of Jeff, Scott Barone, our own Sina, and OKC’s own Winfred Addy (2248, but I overheard Britt saying he has been as high as 2500+ and played in the Olympics for his country Ghana some moons ago).

I saw two of these matches up close and personal. The first was between Sina and Scott. Scott showed incredible mobility and power, often killing Sina’s serves early in the match. They also exchanged many fierce drive rallies, which had the crowd dreaming of ever being able to perform such shots! Sina adapted as the match wore on, and especially in the 4th/5th games adjusted his serves to be shorter, lower, and with more underspin, which Scott began to have trouble returning well. Sina’s awesome backhand loop and great cross-court placements (forcing Scott to move farther and farther) eventually gave him the edge necessary to win in the 5th.  Winfred won his matches against Jeff and Scott, and Sina won against Jeff, to setup a Winfred/Sina final.

Thought Winfred started off a bit slowly (for him), he rapidly picked up steam and his lightning-fast loop/kills and very deceptive serves got the better of Sina to grant him the Gold medal. A fine performance by our very own Sina to win the Silver!

Another in a long line of well-run, efficient and enjoyable tournaments by our Brethren in OKC (Britt Salter, Tourney Director).  Afterwards, I had a brief but joyous visit with my son and his fiancé in Norman, a quiet and contemplative drive home, to a welcoming shower and well-earned repose.

God is good!               Here are the final tourney results, courtesy of Britt:

The National Motorsport Association's National Championship is set for July 24th through July 30th in Ponca City, Oklahoma

Temecula, CA, June 14, 2011: NMA Regional qualifiers are now underway around the country as action pack competition heats up for a qualifying spot and chance to compete for a number one plate during the 36th Annual NMA Grand National Championships in Ponca City, Oklahoma on July 24- 30, 2011. Competitors are fighting for top points in their region in hopes of competing with other top amateur/semi pro performers in the country.

This year, we’ve added more qualifying regions. NMA’s qualifying system now consists of 4 to 6 events located in convenient areas around the country. Racers can now participate closer to home, saving money and improving their chance of qualifying. With the increased interest at the qualifiers, the 2011 NMA Grand National Championship is expected to be a record breaking event.

To qualify for the championships, each racer must participate in a minimum of two events in their region and finish in the top twelve based on the entire region. There is no limit as to the number of classes a racer can qualify in per their age and ability.

This year’s championships will see the motorcycle factories onsite to support the riders. Additionally, over 40 aftermarket supporters and vendors are geared up to provide support and services to all involved.

For more information, please visit us at www.nmamx.com or

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU WITH US IN PONCA CITY TO PARTICIPATE & ENJOY THIS GREAT MOTOCROSS EVENT.

About NMA The National Motosport Association (NMA) was founded in 1970 when motocross wasn’t quite the sport it is today. NMA, presenters of the World Mini Grand Prix, the most prominent national amateur through pro motocross event in the United States began 40 years ago. For 18 years, the World Mini was presented at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In 2010, this prestigious event was moved to Mesquite, NV where racers from all over the world travel to participate in the biggest motocross event in the world.

One of Oklahoma City's upcoming young rides is Chandler Baker.  Chandler has many wins to his credit including some National Events.  He will be joining hundreds of riders from all across the country in an assault on the National Championship.  Several other Oklahoma riders of all ages will be strong contenders for the Championship in their respective divisions.

Chandlers parents are Chan & Laura Baker, both of which have many Championships to their credit including National Championships and Laura even won the World Championship.  The Bakers own Baker Boys Yamaha in Oklahoma City, a long time advertiser on "Fun in Oklahoma" and the former "Motor Sport News" which was owned by ToneyCo. - Jeff Toney

It started as another GREAT OBS Monthly Jam on Sunday July 10th. The host band was the Steve Coleman Band so of course it began as a special event.  The popular performer, Dan Danger joined the many other performers, playing and singing along with the others.  Dan seemed to be especially enthusiastic on this day and indeed, he was.

When Dan joined in with the Mud Flap Band the performance became intense and Dan Danger Rocked until he Dropped.  Don't worry, Dan is just fine and it was a fantastic Jam by the Oklahoma Blues Society.
Don't miss the next one August 14th at the 66 Roadhouse on NW 39th in Oklahoma City.  No Cover.   Pictures

Sunday 07-03-11 Oklahoma City - Jeff Toney
The inaugural Independence Celebration instantly reaches new heights
It started as just another poker run to raise money for an extremely important charity, The Wounded Warriors Project - it began to grow and grow and all of a sudden it grew beyond a simple poker run due to visions of THE man behind the Point After Saloon & Grill.  Charles contacted me and others and explained his remarkable vision - oh so glad I signed on to help in what little way I could because due to a remarkable person, OKC has another fantastic Annual Event for a very remarkable charity - Thank you Charles for allowing me to be a minor part of what is surly going to become something really big for Oklahoma.  Jason Cordero absolutely stole the show in a remarkable performance.

The event rapidly grew beyond a simple poker run to a tremendous Celebration including a big after party in honor of the many that braved 100+ degree heat to participate in the Poker Run.  It was a party with several bands that caught the spirit of the event and it just kept getting better and better as the evening went on.  It culminated in remarkable performances of Live Music in OKC by many.

As the former NTO band took the stage the magic really kicked in.  What a remarkable performance by such a talented group.  You just had to wonder how it could be topped.  Not sure it was topped but when the Host band Ambiance took the stage and started out with "A good Night" featuring the exciting and very talented Jason Cordero it became apparent that it was indeed a good night, no, a remarkable night.

The Ambiance band performed "Rolling with the Flow" which is exactly what their leader, Sherri Cook has done for so many years in being a key factor of keeping live music alive in Oklahoma. By now the electricity in the place was building big time.  All of a sudden Jason cuts loose with his fantastic rendition of "Billy Jean" and it quickly became an out of this world experience.  Talk about electricity, the hair on your arms was standing straight out.  Really, you had to be there and if you were you are still reeling, just as I am.

Thank you Ambiance for a remarkable finish to a remarkable day.  Thank you Charles for creating what is going to become a landmark event for OKC.  I hope to continue to be a small part of it in the future but even if I am not, I will not miss the future events.  Just way too good to pass up.  I especially want to extend a very big THANK YOU to the many that braved the heat to honor the Wounded Warriors as a lot of money was raised to help the Wounded Warriors Project.

May we all remember what this holiday is really about and it is not fireworks, it is the sacrifices that so many have made to protect our freedoms.  I close with a very humble salute to the thousands that have given so much for us - Every time you can, donate (even a dollar) to the Wounded Warriors Project, in fact make it a point to do that each and every month.  Give up one coffee a month to say thank you to those in wheel chairs and so forth that gave it all for you. Past & Present - Vickie Ayers & the Oklahoma Smash Hit Maya Band Are A Major Part Of Live Music History in Oklahoma  I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to reconnect with such an important person to Live Music in Oklahoma's history.  It is the people like Vickie and Bands like Maya that were so very important to making Oklahoma such an important part of the music world back in the day.  The heritage has carried on through history and has been an inspiration for the fantastic Live Music World that Oklahoma enjoys today.  It is that rich history that makes Oklahoma one of the top focal points for Live Music Today.

I was active in the Live Music World back in the day but was always in the background (where I feel comfortable) but now I find myself a little more out front trying to help keep the Live Music ball rolling.  Times like this certainly give me the drive to help carry on the tradition in what little ways I can.

I hope all of you will get out and enjoy the rich tradition of Live Music Oklahoma has to offer because some of the very best talent in the world is right here in the little clubs, local concerts in the park, and many other venues available.  Thank You to Vickie and the many others that have made Live Music in Oklahoma such a wonderful part of Oklahoma and the World.  Oklahoma really appreciates you, at least the thousands and thousands of us that remember you.

Live Music in Oklahoma has always been fantastic and always will be.  There are many opportunities to get out and enjoy some of the best music in the world right here in Oklahoma, TODAY, check the Calendar of Events, get out, have some fun, and build fantastic memories that will last a lifetime.  All clubs and venues offer non-alcoholic drinks - and you can be like me, enjoy the music and leave early.

05-25-11  Bethany - The Children's Center

12-year-old Boy Experiences a “Miracle” on 39th Street  Monday, May 9th began as a typical day for 12-year-old Bradley Reimer…so everyone thought. He had made normal, random sounds during an afternoon special education class, but while he was in the process of changing rooms, he suddenly began speaking real words. The improvement was so remarkable special education coordinator DeLisa Manley came out of her office to see if what she was hearing was really true.

“It was so exciting. I was literally jumping up and down,” Manley said.

Bradley’s words became sentences, and it wasn’t long afterward that he was counting to thirty, singing his ABC’s and calling out the names of caretakers who’d been around him during the year he has been a patient at The Children’s Center in Bethany, Oklahoma. For the first time since he first arrived in a near-coma-like condition following a car accident in 2009, the Kansas boy who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, in a real sense, came out of his shell.

“He said, ‘Hi Bryan, how are you doing?’ I said, ‘good.’ He (Bradley) was like, ‘I’m doing wonderful!’” said Bryan Hansen, a patient activity aide at the Center, who was pleasantly surprised when the boy knew his name.

Bradley’s experience is definitely unique, according to experts at the Center who frequently see patients with traumatic brain injuries.

“We know spontaneous recovery happens. Typically in a brain injury it happens earlier on. I call it a miracle,” said Heather Jarvis, Bradley’s speech-language pathologist.  Want to know more about Bradley?  Watch his HopeTV story here.

Chandler Baker of Oklahoma City won a coveted Podium (3rd place) Finish at the Nationals  in Texas over the weekend but it was disappointing to him.  Chan's clutch went out in the last turn of the last lap and he had to push his bike across the finish line and lost a position in doing so.  To place 3rd against the best in the country is very good so cheer up Chan Baker, Oklahoma is very proud of you.

The Rocking K Saloon in South Oklahoma City Celebrates it Birthday  When I arrived the place was packed.  After searching, there were only two empty seats and how lucky can you get, right next to the prettiest lady in the house.  Naturally I sat down next to her.  As she was turning around she was saying these seats are taken, you have to leave.  Once she turned around and saw me (guess I looked like a hurt little puppy or something - tried to) she said but it will be all right for you to sit there until they arrived.  Turns out one of those coming was one of the best little sweethearts you will find - Sharon Kemerley - well known representative of the Oklahoma Blues Society.

Big Time Pool Tournament in Oklahoma City  I got a taste of the big time pool tournament that is under way in OKC -  If you like pool you most definitely do not want to miss this event that will wrap up on Saturday at Slick Willies on W. Reno in Oklahoma City. It starts at 11am and will wrap up by around 4pm.  Get there early because you will be amazed at the extreme talent you will find.  Shown here is Terry Guess (blue shirt) of Albany Missouri who was ranked #9 in the World for 2010.  He is leading here in Oklahoma after winning the Missouri Tournament last month. It only took him two shots to take me out and he was being nice to me.

Kinser Captures World of Outlaws Pike County Thriller  King of the Outlaws holds off Sides,  Darrah for third victory in four starts.
Kinser took the lead on
lap 12 of the 35-lap feature in his Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet/Maxim, but Sides and Darrah took shots at the 20-time King of the Outlaws in every corner, racing three-wide at times down the backstretch at the 3/8-mile speedway.

The Chili Bowl is Over as is the Daytona 500 - Time for Racing in Oklahoma to Begin   I have begun listing the many schedules for auto racing in Oklahoma.  Oklahoma is considered to be one the the hot beds of racing in the United States and has produced more super stars than you can imagine.  From Kart Racing through top level Sports Cars, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, NHRA Divisional Drag Racing, Indy Car Racing, World of Outlaws Late Model Racing, NASCAR Racing, and the list goes on including being the home of one of top racing series in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series.  I don't think you can turn on the TV to a race of any kind and not see one of the competitors that made it to the top through racing in Oklahoma.  Get out and support Grass Roots Racing in Oklahoma.

The Blues Society's 3rd Wednesday Jam was simply REMARKABLE and PACKED.  Add to it the appearance of Miss Blues herself and it simply doesn't get any better.   Not only was there a long list of truly great performers but add in FREE admission and FREE food.  For an old bachelor guy, that is very important.  Another thing that is very important is a gig like this attracts a lot of really pretty women (and handsome guys I guess).  I think I missed my funeral and went straight to heaven - pretty girls, FREE admission. FREE food and simply spectacular music.

Valentine's Day Alive and Well in OKC
After averaging over a thousand hits a day for the previous several weeks, Valentine's Day shrunk it to 25 for the Big Day.  Actually, that figure will rise by a considerable portion but it will not reach the 1,000 a day for previous weeks.  Just proves that there is indeed "Fun in Oklahoma"

Newcastle Oklahoma's Kylie Morgan Blows the Roof Off at the PBR in Oklahoma City  From the start Kylie Morgan has been a champ, she's a winner & a great person. As V.P.  The Keno Chili Cook Off, Super Bowl Watch, and Birthday Party Was a Big Success
at least that is what I would call it.  With an 80/20 split in the crowd favoring the Steelers it was disappointment for many but EVERYONE had a good time.  Put it on your Calendar for next year.  You will be glad you did.

The most vocal Steeler supporter Paci Sap actually went over and she gave hugs and cheek kisses to the most vocal Packer group, supported by the bartender.  Now that is very good sportsmanship.  It was the mood of the night as all had a great time.  More Pictures
